According to a survey conducted by ADT and the Clery Center regarding what today’s college students are most worried about, physical safety was the leading response with a staggering 82 percent of college students saying they were “concerned” about their physical safety on campus.  

College campuses are usually large and open areas, leaving many spots on campus susceptible to outsiders and unwanted visitors. And with violent incidents on the rise, students are worried that their campuses lack the security needed to keep them safe, and deal with violent incidents when they occur.  

Why Is This Happening?  

Violent incidents on college campuses and schools are on the rise. According to data from Everytown researchers, there have been eight shootings on college campuses since 2007 that killed three or more people.   

But it isn’t only shootings that college students need to worry about. The issues of sexual assault, a lack of trust in the Title IX process, and drugging amongst students at bars and parties have also become prevalent issues. Students are not only worried about being victims of crime, but worried about how the incident will be handled.   

According to the survey conducted by ADT and the Clery Center, 77 percent of students say they occasionally worry about an active shooter, but 56 percent of students claim they have never interacted with a security guard on campus. This statistic illustrates the worry that college students live with, yet, the lack of resources available for them to manage these stressors.  

The survey concluded that the top five factors contributing to students worrying about their physical safety were: 

1. Lack of security presence 
2. Dark pathways
