Breaking Down DEI: What Questions Should I Ask On My DEI Surveys?

If a company is implementing DEI strategies within their workplace, chances are, they surveyed their employees to get a feel for their values, how safe they perceive the workplace to be, their level of belonging and more. These baseline questions will serve as a blueprint on how to best implement strategies that are not only realistic meet the needs of most employees.

According to a study from Culture Amp, only 40 percent of companies with DEI policies report conducting employee surveys to measure the progress of the initiatives and their employee’s feelings. If you aren’t familiar with DEI surveys, it might be scary to think about creating one.

Kokomo24/7® has created a list of some of the most commonly asked questions in the sectors of diversity, equity and inclusion that have helped companies implement successful policies in the past.

Diversity

1. How diverse do you think the executive team is?

2. What does our promotion process look like in terms of diversity?

3. Do we celebrate diversity?

4. Does HR source new candidates and hires from underrepresented communities?

5. Do you feel comfortable talking about your culture in the workplace?

6. How committed is your management to supporting colleagues with disabilities?

7. Where do you think the company can improve on diversity going forward?

Inclusion

1. Does employee training promote inclusivity?

2. On a scale of 1-10, how comfortable are you communicating concerns safely within the organization?

3. Do you feel confident voicing contrary opinions in meetings?

4. How can we give more freedom of expression as an organization?

5. Have you ever faced discrimination in the workplace?

6. True or False: I can bring my authentic self to work.

Equity/Employee Satisfaction

1. How burnt out are you? Are you satisfied as an employee?

2. Do you feel like you have ever been treated unfairly?

3. Do you think promotion is awarded fairly among employees?

4. True or False: If I make a mistake, it won’t be held against be unfairly.

5. True or False: Incidents, especially violent, racial, religion or gender based are not tolerated at all.

6. True or False: I’d recommend this company to people as a great place to work.

The questions above are just a few of the routine DEI questions that many companies have found success with. DEI policy is only as strong as its implementation and the data gathering and analysis portion will act as the foundation of your DEI policy. Getting baseline data from your employees allows you to easily measure the impact of your strategies, something that only 20% of companies effectively measure according to a survey from DNV.
