How Kokomo24/7® Can Help Universities Better Manage Title IX Policy

Title IX was passed as part of the Education Amendments in 1972 and prohibits students from being discriminated against based on their sex. The law also seeks to assist those who are victims of sexual violence or sex-based discrimination at school.

Schools that fail to comply with Title IX could lose out on their federal funding and face legal action from students who didn’t receive their guaranteed support. Title IX is one of the most important laws implemented at public schools, but despite being more than 50 years old, many universities face challenges when it comes to complying with Title IX policy.

Kokomo24/7® understands the importance of helping colleges and universities comply with Title IX regulations to best serve and protect your student body and recognizes the many challenges that schools face as they respond to student claims. Kokomo24/7®’s robust, yet easy-to-use health and safety software platform can help better manage and simplify the challenges that arise from managing a Title IX department.

Our goal is to bridge the gap between students and administration, leading to a safer campus environment for all.

Common Challenges

According to stats from RAINN.org, 2 out of 3 sexual assaults go unreported.  Whether this is because students are afraid of retaliation, don’t know how to report to Title IX or don’t want to go through the formal process and relive their trauma, it is vital for schools to provide clear and safe ways for students to report incidents of discrimination or violence at school.

Many schools also have Title IX policies that may confuse students. For example, an article from USA Today detailed a freshman at a California college who was assaulted and asked for confidentiality during the investigation to protect her identity. What was never conveyed to her was that asking for confidentiality prevented the Title IX office from knowing her name. This prevented them from ever contacting her, reviewing her case, and therefore, never disciplining the offender.

It is imperative for publicly funded universities to not only provide easy and clear ways for students to report to Title IX, but also for the Title IX policies to protect the students. Violent incidents on college campuses and schools are on the rise. According to data from Everytown researchers, there have been eight shootings on college campuses since 2007 that killed three or more people. The same data shows 202 school shootings in 2021 alone.

But it isn’t only shootings that college students need to worry about. The issues of sexual assault, a lack of trust in the Title IX process and drugging amongst students at bars and parties have also become prevalent issues. Students are not only worried about being victims of crime, but worried about how the incident will be handled.
