When you hear about bullying, you probably think of school children picking on each other on the playground or calling each other names in class, but did you know that 30 percent of American workers are bullied at work every day?
While the problem of bullying in schools has been extensively addressed and covered, bullying among adults in the workplace has taken place at record-high rates, affecting more than 76 million workers. According to Harvard Business Review, workplace bullying included discrimination, rumor spreading, hostility, and even physical assault.
At Kokomo24/7®, we recognize that bullying can happen everywhere, and we can provide your organization with robust, yet easy-to-use tech tools that can help your organization foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.
What Is Happening?
According to the Workplace Bullying Institute, workplace bullying is “repeated, health-harming mistreatment by one or more employees of an employee: abusive conduct that takes the form of verbal abuse; or behaviors perceived as threatening, intimidating, or humiliating; work sabotage; or in some combination of the above.”
According to the WBI’s 2021 report on workplace bullying, almost 50 percent of remote workers also experienced bullying and most of them feel like their employer didn’t handle the situation properly. The report revealed that traditional methods of addressing workplace bullying are usually unsuccessful because they not only put the blame and burden of proof on the victim, but often focus on the individual instead of as a system.
The report from Harvard Business Review highlighted how the only effective way to address workplace violence was at a systematic level that focused on prevention. While individual behavior matters, bullying in the workplace happens because it is allowed to.
“Bullying is a behavior of opportunity enabled by organizational environments that allow it to occur and continue. Organizations can’t eliminate egotism from human nature, but it is possible to create systems in which egotistical behavior is discouraged rather than reinforced.” explained the author of the report, Ludmila N. Praslova.
